How to Buy Superior Quality Hamburger
with Less Fat for Less Money

Hamburger If you purchase your meat from a store that has an in-store butcher area then you may be able to buy better quality hamburger for less money.

Sometimes stores will have a special sale on one of their roasts (top round roast, or butt roast, or sirloin roast, or London broil) for less than the price of hamburger. If you need some hamburger and the per pound price of the roast is less than the per pound price of hamburger, then you can ask the store butcher to grind the roast into ground beef for you. This will yield a lot of high quality ground beef that contains very little fat.

When you get home you can divide the ground beef into quantities that you normally serve your family. Use a permanent marker and write the approximate weight and date on as many heavy-duty freezer bags as you need and that you do not plan to use immediately. Then freeze the ground beef packages for future meals.

If you buy your meat from a store that does not have its own butcher department then you may wish to consider investing in a good quality electric meat grinder so you can grind your own hamburger at home from high quality cuts of meat. (Note: Your meat grinder could also be used to convert some "tough" wild game meat into more easily digestible ground meat. Ground "wild game" meat also absorbs herbs and spices better and more evenly than thicker cuts of "wild game" meat and this can frequently enhance and significantly improve the flavor and chewability of the "wild game" meat.)

Grandpappy.
