All Scripture Verses are from the New International Version (NIV) of the Holy Bible.

Introduction

Communion The Lord's Supper is also called the Lord's table, or the breaking of bread, or communion, or Eucharist, or Mass.

The Lord's Supper was instituted by Jesus Christ after He and His disciples had eaten the Passover meal. The following scripture verses describe this event.
The above scriptures mention that the Passover meal was eaten on the first day of the feast of Unleavened Bread. The three primary components of the Passover meal were lamb, unleavened bread, and the fruit of the vine. After eating the Passover meal Jesus, the lamb of God, instituted what is known as the Lord's Supper and it consisted of unleavened bread and the fruit of the vine.

Let's look at unleavened bread and the fruit of the vine in more detail.

Unleavened Bread

Let's begin by looking at a few Old Testament scriptures that describe the Feast of Unleavened Bread.
Unleavened bread is basically any bread, wafer, or cracker that is made without using any yeast. However kosher unleavened bread is subject to more restrictions than simply the omission of yeast.

The above scriptures clearly say that unleavened bread, or bread that is made without yeast, had to be eaten during the Passover and that no yeast was to be allowed in anyone's home. The word leaven refers to bread yeast and bread yeast will cause bread dough to rise if the dough is allowed to rest undisturbed in a dark warm place for about two hours. When the Israelites were driven out of Egypt the Israelites left in haste and there was no time to wait for their bread dough to rise. The purpose of eating unleavened bread by future generations was to remind them that their exodus from Egypt was done in haste in obedience to God's command.

The above Passover scriptures clearly forbid eating anything made with yeast and the scriptures also say that no yeast should be found in a Jewish person's home during the Feast of Unleavened Bread.

No Old Testament scriptures contain any recommendation or restriction on the type of beverage that could be drunk with the Passover meal. However in the 21st century the Jewish people still celebrate the Passover every year and they still eat unleavened bread. They also consume kosher Passover wine during this meal. Kosher Passover wine contains up to 15% alcohol depending on the type of wine and the type of wine yeast used. Kosher Passover wine is fermented from wine yeast that is derived from the yeast on fruits such as grapes. The Jewish people clearly understand the difference between bread yeast and wine yeast. Leaven is bread yeast. Bread yeast does a good job of making bread dough rise. However, bread yeast does a terrible job of fermenting wine. Wine yeast, such as the yeast found on the skin of grapes, does an excellent job of fermenting wine. But wine yeast does a terrible job of making bread dough rise. This is not new knowledge. This knowledge has been around for thousands of years. During the Passover meal in the 21st century Jewish people consume alcoholic wine that was fermented with wine yeast. But Jewish people will not eat leavened bread during the Passover celebration. This allows them to obey the commandments of God for the Passover meal and the Feast of Unleavened Bread.

It should also be mentioned that after wine has finished fermenting in a large container then the fermented wine is siphoned into another container, or into bottles, and the wine yeast is left behind in the original container where it can be discarded. Therefore kosher Passover wine is fermented alcoholic wine without any wine yeast in it.

It should also be mentioned that the kosher Passover wine that can be consumed during the Passover feast is subject to more processing restrictions than ordinary kosher wine that can be consumed anytime during the year.

Anyone can easily verify the above statements by doing a simple internet search using the words "kosher Passover wine."

The wine label in the above left picture is an approved kosher Passover wine (see bottom of label) and it has the kosher approved for Passover symbol by the "Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America" near the middle right side of the label (a large Capital O or circle around a Capital U with the letter P outside the circle) and it contains 11% alcohol (see bottom of label). This brand of kosher Passover wine can be purchased in many grocery stores in the USA and in Walmart during the Passover season each year.

The wine label in the above right picture is an approved kosher wine (see bottom of label) and it has the official kosher approved symbol by the "Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America" near the middle right side of the label (a large Capital O or circle around a Capital U) and to the left of the symbol it says "Not for Passover Use" and it contains 11% alcohol (see bottom of label). This brand of kosher wine can be purchased in many grocery stores in the USA throughout the year.

I am not suggesting that Christians should start following Jewish kosher rules. The purpose of this discussion is to simply explain what Jewish people currently do every year during Passover.

I am a Christian and I am not a Jew. However my observation has been that most non-Jewish people do not understand the above basic concepts and therefore they arrive at erroneous conclusions about what is permitted and what is not permitted during the Passover feast. Many non-Jewish people simply believe whatever another non-Jewish person tells them about the Passover and unleavened bread and alcohol, and they don't bother to verify the truth about what they are told because they really want to believe what they have been told even if it is not the truth.

There are some non-Jewish people in the 21st century, and there have been some non-Jewish people during the past 200 years, who have professed that they have almost perfect knowledge about how the ancient Jews actually practiced their religion 2,000 years ago. However, there are more than thirteen million Jews alive today who are intimately knowledgeable about their faith and who are staking their eternal souls on the way they currently practice their faith based on the traditions that have been handed down to them by their Jewish ancestors for the past 2,000 years. You have the right to decide which of these two groups of people you will believe in matters that relate to how Jews observe the Passover feast.

The Fruit of the Vine

Now let's take a look at grape juice and wine. Wild yeast is present on the outside layer, or skin, of all fruits including grapes. Even if the fruit is rinsed with clean water to remove most of the yeast, a few tiny particles of yeast will still remain embedded in the pores of the skin of the fruit and those tiny yeast particles cannot be rinsed off. When grapes are harvested and then crushed the juice inside the grapes will make contact with the yeast on the skins of the grapes. That yeast will immediately begin to feed on the natural sugar in the grape juice and as the yeast multiplies it will gradually create alcohol and carbon dioxide. In the very beginning the amount of alcohol will be trivial. However, depending on the amount of yeast that was present at the beginning, sometime between six to twelve hours after the juice has been extracted from the grapes the precise concentration of alcohol can be measured but the amount of alcohol will be very, very low. However the fermentation process will continue for a maximum of about six weeks, or until all the sugar in the juice has been consumed by the yeast, or until the alcohol content of the juice has reached its maximum possible level of approximately 14% to 15% depending on the wine yeast that is used. Then the yeast will stop multiplying and it will settle to the bottom of the wine container. The fermented wine will then be siphoned into bottles and the yeast and any impurities will be left behind in the fermentation container. Although the flavor and the aroma of the bottled wine may gradually change with the passage of time, the amount of alcohol in the wine will not change.

The only way that ancient Israelites could have prevented the natural wild yeast on the skins of the grapes from creating alcohol was to heat (or boil) the grape juice immediately after it was extracted from the grapes. There is no mention anywhere in the entire Bible of grape juice or wine being heated or boiled. It should also be mentioned that refrigeration did not exist in ancient Israel. However, some grapes were dried into raisins and raisins are mentioned in the Holy Bible. And some grapes may have been made into a jam or jelly or preserves but this is not mentioned in the Bible. Fresh grapes will only remain fresh for approximately 2 weeks in a cool area after the grapes have been harvested from the grape vine. Therefore in ancient Israel the most common method of preserving a grape harvest for future consumption was to allow the grape juice to ferment because the alcohol killed all of the harmful microorganisms that could make the juice unfit for human consumption. Therefore the only difference between new wine and old wine was the concentration of alcohol in the wine and the flavor and aroma of that wine.
The above scripture verse clearly says that people were getting drunk on new wine. Anyone who says that new wine contains absolutely no alcohol is adding words to the Bible that are not there, and which are not true, in order to perpetuate a myth that he or she personally wishes to believe.

It should also be mentioned that Passover occurs in March or April of each year. Depending on the type of grapes, the grape harvest in Israel begins in July or August and the grape harvest ends in September or October. The latest that grapes could be harvested is October and the earliest that Passover could be observed is March. This is a minimum time span of approximately five months. To assume that there was absolutely no fermentation in the grape juice during this five month period requires a person to believe in something that is not reasonable and to believe in something that is not supported by any scriptures anywhere in the entire Bible. In other words, it requires a person to interpret scripture based on what that person simply wants to believe. Or it requires a person to believe lies that have been propagated about the shelf life of unfermented grape juice in ancient Israel.

The above statements are scientifically correct and anyone can verify the validity of the above comments. However it is also possible to simply deny the truth of the above statements without doing any type of research. This would allow a person to loudly proclaim that the above statements are a lie and that person could then continue to believe anything he or she wanted to believe. However, believing a lie does not make a lie the truth.

If the above statements are correct then this has implications for the "fruit of the vine" that was consumed by Jesus and His disciples at the Last Supper. Even if the juice had just been squeezed out of fresh grapes earlier that day (which was not possible because there were no fresh grapes in March or April), that juice would still have contained some trivial amount of alcohol by the time it was served in the evening. If the juice had been squeezed out of fresh grapes a few days earlier (which was also not possible) then the juice would have contained more alcohol. If the juice had been processed during the previous grape harvest season then the amount of alcohol would have been much higher. The Holy Bible does not say how old the "fruit of the vine" was and therefore no precise statement can be made about the alcohol content of the "fruit of the vine." The only thing that can be truthful said is that the "fruit of the vine" was probably some type of grape juice or wine and therefore it had to contain some alcohol but nobody, except God, knows how much.

The alcohol content of the "fruit of the vine" was not an issue in Christian churches until the mid-1800s. At that time some Christian churches decided to "vilify" alcohol because some people were drunkards and the Holy Bible condemns drunkenness. But in order to completely stigmatize alcohol they also decided to start the "false rumor" that the "beverage" consumed by Jesus and His disciples during the Lord's Supper was "pure grape juice" and it did not contain any alcohol.

This approach would be similar to "forbidding" intimate relations between a legally married husband and wife simply because some people are sexually immoral. This approach would be in complete defiance of God's intended purpose for marriage between one man and one woman. And completely outlawing all sexual relationships would not prevent some immoral people from engaging in sexual immorality. It would only cause problems for God fearing Christians who were not guilty of sexual immorality. It would cause some good Christians to stop having normal relations with their God given spouse, or to pretend that they were not having normal relations with their God given spouse, or it would force some good Christians to stop attending their church because their church was no longer a Christian church that taught the truth as revealed in the Holy Bible.

However some churches believed if they openly condemned any and all use of alcohol then they would be doing God a great service even though this is in complete defiance of what the Holy Bible actually teaches, and it is a direct criticism and reprimand to Jesus for His first miracle of turning water into wine, and it is a direct criticism and reprimand to God for serving the best aged wine at a feast that God will personally host.
The Holy Bible clearly explains that overindulgence in alcohol is a sin but the Holy Bible also says that the moderate consumption of alcohol is approved by God. Churches that decide that they are going to fix the Holy Bible by taking away the right that God gave His children to consume alcohol in moderation are telling God that they think that He made a mistake giving His children this right and they are going to fix His mistake by completely forbidding the consumption of alcohol in any quantity.

Let's once more take a look at one of the scriptures mentioned at the beginning of this article.
The above clearly says that during the Last Supper Jesus drank the "fruit of the vine" and that He shared His cup with His disciples and that His disciples divided the contents of Jesus' cup into their own cups. The above scriptures contain no clarification of what the "fruit of the vine" was.

However the "fruit of the vine" had to be some type of beverage that was made from a fruit that grew on a vine and that beverage could be drunk from a cup. Since grapes were a very common fruit in ancient Israel and since grapes grow on a vine then it is probable that the "fruit of the vine" was made from grapes. Whether of not the "fruit of the vine" was fermented is not specifically mentioned in the above scriptures. It may be that God intended for us to use "common sense" instead of "wishful thinking" to answer this question which only became an issue about 200 years ago.

Another issue is whether or not the wine in ancient Israel was diluted with water. In the 21st century wine is made with approximately 1 part fruit juice mixed with 3 parts non-chlorinated water. This optimizes the overall fermentation process with the final result being a wine with a smooth pleasant flavor and a reasonable level of alcohol. After the wine has completed its fermentation process and the wine has been properly aged then more water is not added to the wine. This would be diluting the wine and that is not considered to be acceptable in the 21st century. However, it would be inappropriate to assume that wine making procedures and wine quality standards were the same in ancient Israel as they are in the 21st century.

On the other hand it is not unreasonable to assume that some Christian churches may have added some water to their wine in order to reduce the alcohol content of that wine so that parents would not feel guilty about allowing their children who had accepted Jesus as their Savior and who were full members of their church to participate in the Lord's Supper and drink a very small portion of diluted wine.

When the pilgrims originally began to colonize America they fermented wine with the understanding that wine was a gift from God but that drunkenness was from the Devil and therefore moderation was expected in the consumption of all alcoholic beverages.

Each Christian denomination has its own unique history of how their "official position" on alcohol has gradually changed since the mid-1800s and that information is freely available on the internet. The following is simply a very brief and very general summary of the use of wine in the Lord's Supper since the mid-1800s.

In the mid-1800s several Christian denominations in the USA encouraged their members to voluntarily abstain from all alcoholic beverages. This gradually led to the temperance movement and in 1919 the 18th Amendment to the US Constitution prohibited the manufacturing and sale of alcoholic beverages in the USA. Therefore all Christian churches throughout the USA had to replace wine with pasteurized unfermented grape juice when they observed the Lord's Supper. In 1933 prohibition was appealed with the 21st Amendment and the US government began to control and tax all alcohol sales. Since wine was once again legal in the USA many Christian churches returned to their former practice of serving members a very small portion of wine when they observed the Lord's Supper. It should be noted that prohibition only affected Christian churches in the USA for 14 years and Christian churches throughout the rest of the world were unaffected during this time and those churches continued to serve wine in small quantities to their members during the Lord's Supper in the same way they had done since those churches were first started.

Since the mid-1950s many Christian denominations in the USA have gradually replaced wine with unfermented grape juice when they observe the Lord's Supper. They offer a variety of reasons why they do this including the argument that things are different now compared to back then and Christian churches need to modernize. At the same time they firmly claim that the Holy Bible is without error, and that it is the Word of God, and that God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Therefore to justify their decisions they need to make statements that are simply not true, such as when Jesus turned water into wine it was actually "pure wine" or non-alcoholic grape juice. And the wine that Jesus and His disciples drank at the Last Supper was also non-alcoholic grape juice. The most serious problem with this argument is that the Greek word "oino or oinos or oinon" for wine that is used in John 2:7-11 where Jesus turned water into wine is the same Greek word used for "wine" in the following passage:
If "oino or oinos or oinon" refers to unfermented wine then the above would imply that Christians are not to get drunk on unfermented grape juice. If the false logic of these churches is followed then that would also mean that Christians should completely abstain from unfermented grape juice, and that Christians should only drink water instead. Water is what some Christian churches now use in the 21st century when they observe the Lord's Supper and it may not be too long before more Christian churches in the USA also begin to follow this trend. The major problem with using water is that water is not a "fruit of the vine" and churches that decide to do this will not be observing the Lord's Supper in the way that Jesus asked us to do until He returns.

Since the Greek word for "wine" that is used in Ephesians 5:18 clearly means fermented wine then it is wrong to say that the water that Jesus turned into "wine" was unfermented wine because the same Greek word is used for "wine" in the following scripture verses:
It would be difficult to believe that the above wine was "unfermented grape juice" because the quality of that wine was praised by the master of the banquet and he also made a comment about the guests having had too much to drink. People don't become intoxicated on drinking too much unfermented grape juice.

Any Christian church that believes that they have the right to interpret scriptures out of the original context of those scriptures is just one step away from becoming one of a large number of apostate Christian churches that have already rewritten the Holy Bible to match the opinions of their leaders.

The process of a committee deciding what is true is referred to as "group think." It occurs when a group of people share the same opinions on specific matters and they encourage and reinforce one another in their opinions regardless of whether or not those opinions are valid. This is one of the many reasons why we have so many different Christian denominations in the 21st century. It is also the reason why some excellent Protestant denominations that started off well a long time ago have gradually strayed away from the truth and with the passage of time they have completely revised most of the doctrinal beliefs of their original church founders which includes Jesus Christ.

You can make your own decision on whether or not you believe it is appropriate to use non-biblical sources to modify what Bible scripture verses actually say. Or would it be better to allow the Bible to stand by itself and to accept whatever the Bible actually says?

I prefer to accept the Holy Bible as it was originally written and that is what I encourage my family members to do. I do not wish to stand before God and try to defend myself for changing scriptures to fit my own opinions and to explain that I had the very best intentions and I did it because I loved my fellow man. If I interpret scriptures to suit my own personal beliefs then the fire will reveal my works as wood, hay, and straw, and I would suffer both loss and humiliation.
Many years ago when my father, Jason Lester Atkins, was still alive he gave a lot of practical advice to his family. One of the things he told us was the following: "When you find yourself in the process of doing something you know is wrong, have the guts to walk away no matter how it looks to others."

Conclusion

No one should believe what this article says just because I wrote it. And no one should believe what anyone else says, or what any committee says, just because of the credentials of that person or committee.

Every honest Christian should base his or her beliefs on what the entire Holy Bible actually says from Genesis through Revelation instead of simply emphasizing a few carefully selected scripture verses and ignoring all the scriptures that contradict a desired interpretation, or changing the original meaning of other scriptures so they do not contradict a desired interpretation.

If you are not comfortable with an English interpretation of a specific scripture verse in your Bible then you can now read the Holy Bible in the original Hebrew, Aramaic, or Greek online for free. These online sources show each scripture verse in several different languages with the words in each language directly above or below the words in the other languages. This allows an honest Christian the opportunity to see exactly what specific scriptures say in the original language in which the scriptures were written.

The following free online websites will allow you to simultaneously see all the individual words in the original Greek that was used to write the New Testament along with the corresponding English translations of that Greek:
  1. https://www.logosapostolic.org/bibles/interlinear_nt.htm
  2. https://biblehub.com/interlinear/
  3. https://www.scripture4all.org/OnlineInterlinear/Greek_Index.htm
In summary:
  1. The Holy Bible condemns drunkenness and the Holy Bible says that drunkards will be cast into the lake of fire.
  2. The Holy Bible also says that it okay for everyone, including pastors, church leaders, and ordinary Christians to consume alcohol in moderation if they so desire and that God will not condemn them. (A collection of scripture verses that support this point of view are in my article: Alcohol and the Christian Faith.)
  3. Anyone who knows that both of the above statements are true but who only mentions the first statement without simultaneously including the second statement is only telling a half-truth. You may decide how you think God will evaluate a person who only tells a half-truth in order to further his or her own agenda.
In conclusion, the following is my opinion about the serving of unfermented grape juice instead of fermented wine at the Lord's Supper. But please, please remember that the following is nothing more than the opinion of one old man and I absolutely do not wish to imply in any way that the following may be acceptable to God.
  1. Unfermented grape juice is a "fruit of the vine" except it does not contain any alcohol.
  2. Unfermented grape juice is the first step in the process of making fermented wine. However to create unfermented grape juice involves the use of chemicals or pasteurization to neutralize the fermentation process. The Holy Bible does not specifically mention this step but the Holy Bible also does not specifically forbid this step.
  3. Unfermented grape juice will allow underage Christians to participate in the Lord's Supper without breaking any laws.
  4. Unfermented grape juice will allow Christians who do not wish to consume any type of alcoholic beverage to participate in the Lord's Supper.
  5. Unfermented grape juice will allow a recovering alcoholic to participate in the Lord's Supper without tempting that person to return to a life of alcoholism. (1 Corinthians 10:13 - No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.)
  6. Unfermented grape juice will allow a Christian church to observe the Lord's Supper without having to obtain a license to serve alcohol.
The above illustrates that it is possible to comply with all the relevant scriptures in the Holy Bible about alcohol and about the Lord's Supper without propagating any unsubstantiated myths, or ignoring, misrepresenting, or rewriting any Holy scriptures.

Respectfully,
Grandpappy.
